Speeding Ticket Probation   asked 25 May 2010
I'm 17 years old. I have had a record with speeding tickets however I have no points on my license now. I got a ticket going 25 over and the Solicitor is willing to knock it down to a 3 point violation so I can keep my license. However he wold give me 6 months probation. What are the consequences of accepting this deal? How does probation show up on my record when I apply for colleges? I travel some and would this effect my ability to leave the country? I am wondering if taking probation will effect me negatively in the future or am i better off taking a license suspension. I have a completely clean record other then Traffic Violations. Thanks

Georgia law requires a 6 month suspension of your license if you are a minor who is caught speeding 24mph(or more) over the posted speed limit. It would appear that the the Solicitor has offered you a good deal in that you can plead to a 3 point violation and therefore keep your license. You shouldn't be concerned about being on probation for a speeding violation. Even if detected by a college on your application, it is not the type of probation that they would hold against you. This type of probation is usually, "non-reporting" which means that you are not required to visit the probation officer every month. For non-reporting probation, you needn't worry about travelling this summer, but keep in mind that you should not get a another speeding ticket. Doing so would trigger a license supension and a possible probation violation! TAKE THE DEAL!
